Yoorrook's ceremonial first hearing began with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at the Stolen Generations Marker in Fitzroy. Djirri Djirri dancers welcomed Commissioners and guests in dance and sang in Woiwurrung language.

Commissioners then moved to Charcoal Lane for the hearing. Charcoal Lane was selected as the location for this landmark event due to its historical significance as a site of First Peoples’ organisation and activism.
