Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

I know about the history of Coranderrk and the removal of First Nations children from their families across Victoria.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

I’ve learnt about Indigenous perspectives and the concept of ‘coming alongside’ through the Early Childhood teacher training I did. I grew up and was schooled overseas.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

At the very least, I would love to see First People’s language (just simple shareable words and phrases) and references to local Country used on signage more widely as I travel through Victoria. More of a visual presence that reminds us all that this is Aboriginal land and reminds us whose Country we are on where ever we may go. I’d like to see powerful reconciliation work happening in schools too.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

By being open and humble listeners. By making a concerted effort to learn.

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

By being open and humble listeners. By making a concerted effort to learn.
