Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

I know that the colonisers called our precious country terras nullius. I know that First Peoples were majorly mistreated, tortured and killed. I know that First Peoples were considered flora and fauna and not counted as part of the population until some years after colonisation.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

It was in now way comprehensive. I was in the Victorian school system from 1987 until 1999. All I was taught was that First Peoples have boomerangs, didgeridoos and hunted for their own food. It was only in 1997, year 10 when I learnt about the stolen generations through a debating topic, not from a formal lesson at school.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

Better education about First Peoples in primary and secondary schools.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

As a health professional I can see the discripenses between the rate of many chronic diseases in the First Nation Peoples and the rest of the Australian population. Many other people, and anyone who has come in contact with First Nations People can also tell their point of view in truth telling leading to treaty.

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

As a health professional I can see the discripenses between the rate of many chronic diseases in the First Nation Peoples and the rest of the Australian population.
