Yes but not through my formal education. Kids should be taught the truth of their past at school.
So bad. I learned almost nothing at school from primary through to university. I was lucky to work in schools (I am a teacher) with a good amount of First Nations history and culture taught, but that’s only because we had a high number of First Nations staff and students. All schools should be taught, not just some based on the staff and students’ backgrounds.
Proper outcomes within the Victorian curriculum (not just ambiguous mentions) of colonisation and the true history of our state and country. Proper training, CUST and otherwise, for staff to ensure they’re delivering lessons/information in a respectful and appropriate manner. A treaty to acknowledge sovereignty and First Nation’s history and voices properly; and school students taught what this is and why we need one.
Learn or educate themselves about the process; and about our dark history. Enter discussions with open ears and give space and room to First Nations voices first. Support a treat and truth telling process.
