Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

Colonisation was devastating to the First Peoples. From stolen lands to rounding people upinto missions and removing children from their families, the effects were profound and a disaster. I am sorry to say that my own ancestors may have had something to do with this as they were very early settlers from England and Ireland. I don’t know if they were involved in the massacres of First Peoples but I hope not.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

Zero.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

Allow First Peoples to look after the environment. The current and previous governments have trashed just about everything. Stop the indiscriminate burning in forests that destroy fauna and flora. Teach people about history and how the land was used prior to colonisation.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

The real history needs to be told, not the sanitised version.

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

The real history needs to be told, not the sanitised version.
