This submission discusses the colonisation of Victoria and how First Nations were tricked into giving land near Merri Creek. It covers what they learnt about First Nations culture in the education system and promotes better understanding and respect for First Peoples.
Submission Transcription
Mass death/genocide of First Nations people. Illegal “treaty”. First Nations were tricked into giving land near Merri creek.
Not at all. I was schooled in the 80s and 90s and learnt very little about the impact of colonisation on First Nations. Some education about indigenous culture, but quite superficial (eg boomerangs etc).
I would be lead by First Nations people and what they feel is most important for them. But I would like to see more factual information given about history and then the impact on future generations. And focus on more local events, rather than generalised events.
Listen to First Nations people. Educate themselves if further information is needed to understand. Have open and honest conversations with other non-first nations, particularly children.
