Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

Colonisation destroyed First Peoples places of habitation, many resources vital to their culture were damaged and they were disrespected and excluded from their own land.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

No. My early school education regarding First Nations history was minimal and limited. I attended Aboriginal art and culture lectures at Melb Uni 50 years ago. I am still learning about their rich culture.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

Permanent indigenous public places such as ceremonial circles. Renaming place names, such as rivers and creeks, mountains and all significant land forms with First People’s language place names.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

First Nations people could share their experience and knowledge of culture and understanding of their Country so others can learn from them. To feel safe sharing their knowledge with others requires a treaty.

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

First Nations people could share their experience and knowledge of culture and understanding of their Country so others can learn from them. To feel safe sharing their knowledge with others requires a treaty.
