Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

I know some things, but not as much as I would like. My education was not centred around impacts of colonisation, and little was taught at school about the impacts.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

Not at all. It was lacking in both depth and breadth. If anything, it celebrated Captain Cook and the colonisation by the English. We learnt more about the first fleet than first nations people.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

We’ve already come a long way from my schooling. My children are learning Woiwurrung at primary school, along with culture studies. due to the small numbers of people qualified to teach the culture subject, they have had to stop offering it now. I hope to see this more mainstream, and accessible. I want to see it grow, and have pathways from primary to secondary school. I also want to see more autonomy for aboriginal groups to make decisions about their affairs.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

I am a global south migrant to these lands, and I do feel like there are many things we stand in solidarity with. I wish we could align out struggles easier, and that there were more collaboration between first nations and migrants from the global south. Maybe where peak bodies for some multicultural groups could liaise and gain legitimacy directly with first nations led bodies.
