Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

I know about the impact of colonisation globally, within my own blood lines and Australia to a degree, I am still missing historical facts that are non-biased and truth-telling. I do not know specifically other then a few things I have read when learning about the Yarra about colonisation of Victoria specifically.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

I had no education through the Victorian education system, and I know my children now going through school have provided the feedback it is no where as extensive us our conversations at home. I am fortunate to have worked as a nurse and in communities and have learnt through relationships and friendships over time. Even then though, it is limited.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

Immersive learning experiences on country, and shared conversation opportunities. I do not learn through online learning modules, I learn through shared story telling and through and with people I am forming relationships with. It would be great for my children to have crosscultural conversations and peer opportunities with First Nations people their own ages.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

Through advocacy and having the confidence of knowing truth and speaking truth amongst other non-First Nations Victorians.

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

Through advocacy and having the confidence of knowing truth and speaking truth amongst other non-First Nations Victorians.
