Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

Colonisation has impacted First Peoples massively, from invading their land to disrespecting the land, their culture and their way of life. Not enough has been done to preserve their history and allow them to flourish in a modern world.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

Having gone through schooling in the 90s, I don’t remember being taught much, if anything at all. I learnt about the First Fleet and Colonisation, but not what that meant for the First Nation’s people or how it really impacted them. It was not comprehensive at all and I don’t feel it has improved much.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

Some Education in schools as a start. Like, “First Nation studies” in conjunction with “Religion and Ethics” or ‘History’ class (for example) Learn about the FULL history. But also, about their culture and way of life/living/history. The stories, the dreamtime, beliefs, how they read and understand the land and flora and fauna. We can learn a lot.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

Be honest and open. Accept and acknowledge what was, and how we can be better. Accept and acknowledge a future, together.

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

Be honest and open. Accept and acknowledge what was, and how we can be better. Accept and acknowledge a future, together.
