Barrie Taylor

Barrie Taylor highlights the betrayal of Batman's treaty by the colonial government and notes that he only began appreciating the reality of early colonial times in retirement. He calls for looking outside Victoria to restore language, culture, and country, asking for forgiveness rather than reconciliation, and promoting First Peoples' history by identifying massacre sites and elevating them to RSL status.

Topics: First Nations history in education, Language, Massacres, Shared understanding

Port Phillip association main protagonists and the betrayal of Batman’s treaty by colonial government

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

At school nothing. Only now in my retirement am l starting to appreciate the reality of early colonial times

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

So much in Victoria has been destroyed. Language culture and country can probably only be remodelled by looking outside Victoria to more intact pre colonial language/culture/country. In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

Not by asking for reconciliation but more by asking for forgiveness. Neil Murray song Myall Creek

Not by asking for reconciliation but more by asking for forgiveness. Neil Murray song Myall Creek
