What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

I am only recently learning about the actual history of colonisation in Victoria. I am a 65 year old woman whose father was from the Netherlands and mother from Noogar country but Irish heritage (white). I was taught absolutely nothing at school about the real history of our country and its impact and ongoing impact on First Peoples.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

I wasn’t edcuated in Victoria but as I said (and I imagine Victoria was no different) nothing with any truth about First Nations history and culture was taught.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

change names -place names, street names, plaques at many places. Change the days certiain holidays are celebrated so that there are celbrations or comisserations on appropriate days for the First Peoples. I would like to see a Treaty. I would like to see more language used – alongside english perhaps, but would also be guided by First Peoples on that.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

Listen, learn, participate in First Peoples events when invited. Listen, Listen, Listen Acknowledge the history, the pain the impact – the ongoing impact call out racism – always contribute in whatever way is appropriate

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

Listen, learn, participate in First Peoples events when invited. Listen, Listen, Listen Acknowledge the history, the pain the impact – the ongoing impact call out racism – always contribute in whatever way is appropriate
