Clare de Bruin
Claire de Bruin, a 65-year-old woman, is recently learning about the true history of colonisation in Victoria. She criticises the lack of comprehensive First Nations history in education and advocates for changing place names, celebrating appropriate holidays, establishing a Treaty, and using more Indigenous languages. She urges non-First Nations Victorians to listen, learn, and participate in First Peoples events.

I am only recently learning about the actual history of colonisation in Victoria. I am a 65 year old woman whose father was from the Netherlands and mother from Noogar country but Irish heritage (white). I was taught absolutely nothing at school about the real history of our country and its impact and ongoing impact on First Peoples.
I wasn’t edcuated in Victoria but as I said (and I imagine Victoria was no different) nothing with any truth about First Nations history and culture was taught.
change names -place names, street names, plaques at many places. Change the days certiain holidays are celebrated so that there are celbrations or comisserations on appropriate days for the First Peoples. I would like to see a Treaty. I would like to see more language used – alongside english perhaps, but would also be guided by First Peoples on that.
Listen, learn, participate in First Peoples events when invited. Listen, Listen, Listen Acknowledge the history, the pain the impact – the ongoing impact call out racism – always contribute in whatever way is appropriate
