Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

a moderate amount that has been entirely learnt through self-guided learning and immersion in Community.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

I myself did not complete schooling in Victoria. However, my daughter is currently in year 4 and receives the majority of her education on this topic from her networks and not through the education system. She is often educating the teaching staff about Aboriginal Victoria. Students are receiving a lack lustre education on this topic, have little to no contact with Aboriginal Australians facilitated in school, no Aboriginal flag flown at the school, no visits or excursions to learn about the Country on which the school is built, zero language artwork or songs shared in the school. There is no acknowledgement of a modern identity of Aboriginal Australia in the schooling system.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

A public holiday celebrating Aboriginal Victorians. Anti-racism training for all government employees. Celebrate modern identity of Aboriginal Australians, not just Aboriginal history

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

Acknowledge that slavery existed in Australia Acknowledge that there are human rights violations impacting Aboriginal Australia today.

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

Acknowledge that slavery existed in Australia Acknowledge that there are human rights violations impacting Aboriginal Australia today.
