Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

I know only a small amount about the devasting long term impacts of colonisation on the first peoples. I know there is intergenerational trauma still impacting first people today and I am regularly disgusted at other Australians racism towards first nation peoples. I know this continues to cause harm as does the dispossession of land and country and many people’s inability to acknowledge the true history of colonisation.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

I did not go through the Victorian education system. However currently working in early childhood education, I believe we are trying to start children’s learning journey about First Nations history and culture embedded in all their learning.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

‘- increased learning opportunities through out the curriculum about First Peoples culture – campaigns about the harm caused by racist words and actions & how others can hold racists to account – politicians and leaders always respectfully talking of and with First Peoples leaders – voice to Victorian Parliament, so First Peoples can influence policy and programs

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

listening, acknowledging the truth and harm caused and supporting treaty

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

listening, acknowledging the truth and harm caused and supporting treaty
