K Forsyth

In this submission, K Forsyth reflects on learning about the colonisation of Victoria through First Peoples-led training and how they disappointingly received little education on First Nations history after immigrating to Australia. They advocate for standardised First Peoples history modules in schools, sharing knowledge to support truth-telling and treaty, and promoting First Peoples history and culture through public holidays and school trips to significant sites.

Topics: Education, First Nations history in education, Shared understanding

Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

Everything I know I owe to working with First Peoples colleagues on our work to advance self-determination in state government. Through First Peoples-led Cultural safety and capability training I have a sound understanding about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

I immigrated to Augralia in 1986 and (disappointingly) I received little to no educaiton about First Nations peoples or history.

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

Standardised First Peoples history modules incorporated into the regular curiculum for all primary and secondary schools throughout Australia. The modules should be developed/endorsed by First Peoples and where possible delivered by First Peoples teachers, Elders or Traditional Owners. At the very least, teachers should be appropriately trained and endorsed by TOCs in their school district to deliver the modules.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

To share knowledge and understanding of First Nations true histories, past atrocities and ongoing injustices. Celebrate and uplift First Nations talent, Culture, knowledge, products and services. Call out racism and contribute to meaningful conversations around Treaty negotiations to dispell untruths.
