Submission Transcription

What do you know about the colonisation of Victoria and its impacts on First Peoples?

Simply put: Some 38 Nations and their peoples, cultures and lores were ignored or ‘displaced’ by Europeans who chose to believe that the land was not being utilised sufficiently. A criminal action yet to be addressed.

What has been your experience learning about First Nations history and culture in Victoria's education system? Do you feel it was comprehensive?

Certainly not obtained through my schooling in this State. My education and understanding on First Nations history has been obtained by my mentors in the Pilbara the Yindjibarndi People in the Pilbara

What changes would you like to see in Victoria to promote better understanding and respect for First Peoples cultures?

By far the biggest, most important change required is the ‘Ignorance Gap’ in the nonindigenous population of the First Peoples cultures, that if understood and embraced would enrich their lives and would lead to real and meaningful change to all on this land.

In what ways do you think non-First Nations Victorians can contribute to the process of truth-telling and treaty?

First and foremost ‘Listening”, but then in hearing, understanding (seeing) what is being conveyed.

In what ways could First Peoples history and culture be promoted in Victoria?

First and foremost ‘Listening”, but then in hearing, understanding (seeing) what is being conveyed.
