I know that there was a lot of untold history. I know that many First Nations peoples were killed and a part of the stolen generation here in Victoria as well.
I grew up in the education system in the 2000s. I finished high school in 2006. I don’t feel at all that we learnt what we should have about First Nations history and culture. I am unaware of what it is today, but I would hope that today’s children are learning far more than I had the chance to. I have had to go do my own research as I got older to learn what I feel should have been the basics in school.
Better integration into the schooling system of learning from First Nations elders. It would be amazing to have a learning opportunity to have First Nations representatives come to the schools and tell their truths and educate children first hand about their culture.
Listen and respect. that simple. Show initiative that we want to learn about their culture and provide means to enable them to share their truths and that we believe a treaty is needed.
