Submission Transcription

How could First Peoples’ history and culture be better taught at school?

Frontier wars and pre-colonial history were not taught in my experience of schooling until university, let alone First Peoples histories since 1788. Colonial rhetoric needs to be critically examined in history curriculum.

How could Aboriginal kids be better supported at school?

I’m not best placed to speak on this. I would like to see greater cultural literacy and cultural safety skills in all teaching staff

How else could we improve the Victorian education system for First Peoples?

More funding and roles made available for KESOs so that each school has more time and support. Embedded curriculum in all subjects and connecting schools with the excellent teaching resources already out there to minimise harm at the hands of uninformed teachers rather than a stand-alone cross curricular priority that falls by the wayside in an overcrowded syllabus.
